Covers: the good and the bad

Some covers of songs can be really well done. Others, not so much. I'm going to talk about covers I listen to, and whether I think they're good or bad.

Smells Like Teen Spirit - Tori Amos (Nirvana Cover)

Normally, you wouldn't think that a cover of the infamous Nirvana song would be any good. But Tori Amos totally makes it her own style. It's totally quiet and dark, you won't even recognize it from the original. The whole song is just her voice accompanied by piano.

Nothing Else Matters - Apocalytica (Metallica Cover)

I really love string covers and string tribute bands. But a lot of times when you're covering metal it's really iffy. So, it could be good or bad. But Apocalyptica did really well this time transforming this song into a string instrumental piece.

Tainted Love - Marilyn Manson (Soft Cell Cover)

I didn't know this song was a cover when I first heard it. But to be honest, the original is way better. The cover isn't bad, it's just not as good as the original.

Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) - Marilyn Manson (Eurythmics Cover)

Even thought it's a cover, this song was Manson's big debut song in the 90s. Paired with the shocking video, it really showed the world who Marilyn Manson was and their sound. I honestly like Manson's version better. It's much darker and is more "me." This is one of those rare times where the cover is better. Happens, though.

This Is Halloween - Marilyn Manson (The Nightmare Before Christmas Cover)

This song is part of an album that is all covers of NBC covers. This one is actually quite good. Of course, nothing could compare to Danny Elfman's ingeniousness, but I think the song is really good.  Manson did a good job.

Personal Jesus - Marilyn Manson (Depeche Mode Cover)

Love this song. Very catchy. Again, Manson did an amazing job with this one, but the original Depeche Mode one doesn't compare. I mostly really like Manson's music video. It was a good spin on the song.

Hurt - Nine Inch Nails (Johnny Cash Cover)

Many people don't know this is a cover, which really gets on my nerves. NIN does a good job with this one. It's already a dark song, but NIN takes it further, with hushed guitars and vocals. I like both versions equally. They're both so good.

Coin Operated Goi - Voltaire (Cover of The Dresden Dolls' "Coin Operated Boy"

Can't really compare this one, because Voltaire puts a funny twist on it. Good song either way, though.

Bela Lugosi's Dead - Godhead (Bauhaus Cover)

This version of the song is way different from the original. It is more of a dance, electro twist on it. It's more club friendly. Once again, it can't compare to the original, thought it is a good song.

Land Of Confusion - Disturbed (Genesis Cover)

Both versions are really good. Their voices are so alike it's crazy. For this one I'm gonna have to go with the Disturbed version just because it's metal.

Shout 2000 - Disturbed (Cover of Tears For Fears' "Shout")

I really like both versions of this song. Disturbed did an amazing job incorporating all the parts to them. But, the original is better.

Living After Midnight - Disturbed (Judas Priest Cover)

I never was a big fan of Judas Priest. They too "glam rock" for me. Less about the music, more about the looks. That's what I've observed. So, Disturbed did it better. Especially the drum solo in the beginning.

Another Brick In The Wall - Korn (Pink Floyd Cover)

Love this song so much. I like the Korn version better because 1) it's heavier. 2) They added stuff that's not in the real version to make it their own, which made it better. 3) Um, it's Korn, duh. Many people are probably like, "What the hell, how can you like that better it's Pink Floyd." Well, Korn it the shit, okay?

Behind Blue Eyes - Limp Bizkit (The Who Cover)

Quick story behind this song. We did this song in my first year of marching band. It was amazing, and I still miss that show every time I listen to this song it makes me sad. But anyway, nothing beats the original. But, Bizkit did do some cool stuff. First of all, this is not the type of music Limp Bizkit does, so I thought it was amazing how they pulled it off. Also there's some electo robot voice that says "L-I-M-P, say it, discover" which I thought was cool.

Misery Business - Sea Of Treachery (Paramore Cover)

I like the Paramore version better. I just don't like the guy's voice. He's a good screamer, it's just his singing voice.

Walk - Avenged Sevenfold (Pantera Cover)

Being a long time, dedicated A7X fan, I was quite stoked when I found this song. Again, this is a good song, but nothing compares to Pantera. Nobody can replicate Pantera. Plus, I don't think Matt's voice really can do the "breathe, spit, walk" thing all that well. But it's all good.

Bad Company - Five Finger Death Punch (Bad Company Cover)

Really good cover. It's so cool to listen to each one and see how the parts correspond. But the original is better here.

Coma White - Apoptygma Berzerk (Marilyn Manson Cover)

I bet they feel pretty cool about having their song covered after they've done so many covers. This cover is really good, it gives it a more upbeat, positive feeling to the song, whereas the original is super dark and depressing, this one is a bit less gloomy. So, I think they're both pretty equal.

Stripped - Rammstein (Shiny Toy Guns Cover)

Really good cover. They make it into their own sound. You wouldn't even recognize it was the original. So, I think the original is better for this one.
