Forgive me if I am incorrect about anything goth here, as I am quite new to the subculture. (Some would call me a babybat.)
Yes, as the title says, I am goth.
If this shocks you, then, well, I'm not really surprised. The stuff I have posted so far is completely not goth. So, yeah, that's who I am.
I'm gonna start by talking about how I came to be a part of the gothic subculture.
All my life, really ever since I've been alive, I've always had a fascination with all thinks dark, spooky, and morbid.
My mom tells me things I don't even remember, like when I was 4 or 5, I'd see Halloween decorations and like them, and want them as my own.
I've always loved Halloween, and scary movies.
When I was about 12, I started to actually have the need to get my own fashion sense and style. I had my awkward phase, as everyone does, where I was trying so hard to be preppy, and listened to pop. But it never worked for me. It just didn't fit. I got made fun of a lot.
It think it was during the summer before my 8th grade year when I finally started to get that I was doing it wrong. I started listening to the local rock station. That's where I got my outlet into the hardcore world. From there, I discovered so many bands that I came to love and made me who I am today. I began to dress better too. Yes, I was still really awkward. (Still am) I started dressing more edgy my 8th grade year, or at least, trying to. Being 13, my parents were still holding me back from a lot of stuff. So, a lot of things I was trying to wear and listen to, my parents (mainly my mom) hated.
Looking back to then, the stuff I was trying to do then is NOTHING compared to what I do now.
Summer before my freshman year, my mom finally let me get the haircut I really wanted. A fauxhawk. Now, don't get me wrong, it was a good haircut. I loved it then. But looking back, I'm thinking, how did I even have friends? I was a fucking queer. But that's okay, I was still trying to figure it out. My freshmen year I had the ugliest hair. It was basically Justin Bieber hair. Oh, and did I mention that since I got my fauxhawk, I was either mistaken for a boy or a lesbian. And trust me, I am not a boy or a lesbian, just for the record. So, I didn't like that part of it. But still, I was soo ugly freshman year, I can't believe I even showed my face.
Through freshmen year, I was getting more and more into hardcore music.
Summer before this school year was where I started getting a bit better. I got super into Motionless In White, and was totally inspired by them in the way that I dressed. I started dressing "goth" because of them. That summer, I also discovered actual goth music. Didn't really like it then, cause back then all I listened to was chugging guitars and screaming. Literally, that was all that was on my iPod.
By the end of the summer, my hair was grown out to a little past shoulder length. I started experimenting with razors and cutting my hair a lot.
And then, the night before the first day of my sophomore year, I did the unspeakable. I shaved the side of my head. My inspiration was Chris Motionless, of course, and it was awesome going to school the next day and seeing people's reactions. I shaved it once more myself a couple months later.
I think that I began to discover the goth subculture December and January of this year. I got more and more into the music, and started watching youtubers who told me everything I need to know. Also, a blog that helped me become the goth I am today: http://ultimategothguide.blogspot.com/
I used to read everything from her blog, and it helped soo much.
I would not be the goth I am today without Marilyn Manson, Motionless In White, Joji Grey, Sebastian Columbine, and many more that I can't think of right away.
So, who am I as a goth?
I'm still learning, actually, though I will tell you what I am so far.
As for style, I really am just pretty basic right now because I don't have the money to buy new clothes, so I just have to make do.
I like tight fitting clothes better than baggy.
I love collars, bracelets, and anything that's leather and/or studded.
I like vests or cut-off collared shirts, which I actually think is a bad hipster habit.
I like belts a lot. Bullet belts especially.
I like heels, and I wear them too much. Also creepers, and pretty much anything with a huge sole.
As for music, I listen to everything. I love all metal, especially metalcore and deathcore.
But, as all goths should, I listen to goth music.
Goth bands that I like include: Razed In Black, Voltaire, UK Decay, The Creepshow, The Cure, Tragic Black, Scarlet's Remains, Skeletal Family, Specimen, Morrissey, Leather Strip, Dead Can Dance, Depeche Mode, The Dresden Dolls, Bauhaus, Burning Image, Angelspit, Antiworld, Apoptygma Berzerk, Astrovamps, 45 Grave, Type O Negative, Theatres Des Vampires, Dimmu Borgir, Rob Zombie, and many more..
There is a lot of prejudice about goths. But, really goths are very intelligent, accepting people. We love history and art. Don't judge a goth, you don't know what they're really like. Try talking to them and asking them about why they are goth. They'll like it, trust me.
